Hospital patients’ data stolen in identity theft case

At least one former employee of the University of Chicago Hospitals stole patient identity information and tried to use it to apply for credit cards, officials said Saturday.

About 85 patients may have been affected, and hospital officials are calling and sending letters to each of them. The patients also have been offered free credit report checks, said John Easton, a University of Chicago Hospitals spokesman.
